This 1970 DeTomaso Mangusta was acquired by its current owner in 2014 in the UK and subsequently shipped to Greece to join his collection. It is an ex-California, two-headlight ‘pop up’ model that is equipped with the Ford 302 cu. in. engine and a later type ZF transmission. It boasts a detailed and enticing history including an excellent restoration carried out in 1992, a concours award at the 50th anniversary of DeTomaso in 2009 in Modena and once belonging to Roger Brotton of DeTomaso marque specialists Three Point Four. More recent work includes a full overhaul of the ZF transmission by Jim Stokes Workshop in 2011 and most recently replacement fluids and an overhaul of the carburettors. | 78,348 miles | — | Richard James, CA | — |

It was offered for sale in August of 1989 for $75,000.00. This car has won numerous concours prizes and was in stock and original condition at time of sale. This vehicle was later advertised in July of 1997 as an unrestored original car with 27,400 miles, at an asking price of $40,000.00. Current owner and location unknown. Update: April 2007, We own 8MA-1086. Present milage is 29000. Very original car, repainted in the original color which the factory called British Racing Green. It is actually more Italian flag green (or what the Italians think BRG should be), much brighter than evident in the posted picture. I will send pics as soon as we get a good sunny day to photograph. Added emergency pull wires for bonnet and both gull wing hatches in case original cables fail. This car is a blast to drive! It starts up everytime, hot or cold. Although the 302 is a bone stock Ford motor and can't rev passed about 4,300 rpm, it has sufficient torque to nicely move the car which weighs about 3,100 lbs. Since almost 70% of the weight is on the rear wheels I have not pushed it hard enough to spin it but I have driven it very briskly around many corners and it holds like crazy, I attribute the fine roadholding to new radials compared to what was put on the car in the late sixties. I've only had the car up to about 110mph, it gets a little darty at that point. I'm 6-4" tall and 210 lbs and I fit in the car with 1/2 to spare over my head; the seat is a little tight so if your waist size is more than a 36 your butt will hurt after a while. I've lengthened the throttle linkage so my leg can stretch out a little more (this can be reversed if desired). The car has never overheated, esp with the new Spal high volume fan. Since the A/C condenser is at the rear of the car with its own cooling fan, running the A/C does not hurt the TYPE cooling. I drive the car about 1 hour every 2 weeks. |

This 1970 De Tomaso Mangusta (chassis 8MA1038) is described by it seller as a ~27k mile, rust-free and no-accident rolling project. With just three owners since new, the backstory is that the car was partially disassembled nearly four decades ago for a re-paint and was never put back together. Incredibly, everything apart from the jack, jack handle and tool roll (and some trim screws) are said to be accounted for, and the originally red body presents well in primer. The black interior is still around, and the original 302ci V8 (which is still attached to the factory ZF transaxle) was upgraded four decades ago with numerous performance pieces including Dan Gurney-style heads. To augment the history presented in the ad, a three-inch-thick receipt file is included along with handwritten notes and service invoices. These are rare, special cars with just ~250 believed to have survived from a production run of 401, and even though there’s a good deal of work to be done here, this example could still be quite a find. Find it here on eBay in Germantown, Tennessee with reserve not met and bidding well north of $100k. Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. for this submission. Produced from 1967 to 1971, the Mangusta is the lesser known predecessor to the Pantera, but its breeding is similar with gorgeous Giorgetto Giugiaro penned lines and a robust American powertrain backed by a ZF 5-speed transaxle. As nice as that is, our favorite part of the car are the gullwing doors over the engine compartment. A careful reading of the ad indicates that this area is partly to blame for the car’s current condition thanks to one of the doors blowing open resulting in a crease that needed to be fixed and painted. Sheet metal looks to be in surprisingly good shape, and the car is claimed to rust-free; this should be easy to verify thanks to its current state. Glass is included, but a lot of the rubber has deteriorated and will need to be sourced or replicated. Unfortunately, this is the best picture of the interior provided. The seats were recovered in leather 40 years ago, but the carpet, dash, door panels and gauges are reportedly factory original. Everything is said to show “minor wear” except for the leather and OEM wood Ferrero steering wheel which will require “refinishing” if the whole car is restored. What’s said to be the original 302ci V8 is still around, and the ad notes that in 1982 it was fitted with a new cam (Cam Dynamics), heads (thought to be Dan Gurney), an intake fitted with a 600cfm Holley carb, a Pertronix ignition and custom-made headers. All of the original parts except the factory ignition coil are included in the sale. A new aluminum radiator, the car’s factory gas tank and the factory ZF transaxle are all included. The only issue appears to be a missing support for the alternator that will need to be sorted as well as a “busted” rear sheave on the rear pulley. Again, the car hasn’t been driven since late 1987, so a thorough going-over will be necessary before it moves under its own power again. All receipts and upgrade literature are included. | 27000 mi | — | — | — |
