- History notes
- This 1987 DeTomaso Pantera is one of approximately 183 GT5-S examples produced between 1985 and 1989, and it was imported to the US and federalized by Amerisport when new. The car was initially registered in Florida, where it is said to have been acquired by the seller in 1994 from the original owner and subsequently relocated to Mississippi. Refurbishment work performed in 2010 by Busted Wrench Garage of Gulfport, Mississippi, involved overhauling the 351ci Ford Cleveland V8 along with performing bodywork prior to a repaint in black. The interior is trimmed in tan leather, and shifting is via a ZF five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. Additional equipment includes a Holley four-barrel carburetor and an Edelbrock intake manifold as well as staggered-width 15″ Campagnolo wheels, integrated fender flares, a rear wing, air conditioning, power windows, a MOMO steering wheel, and an Alpine CD stereo. The brake master cylinder and brake calipers are said to have been rebuilt in 2020. This GT5-S is now offered in Mississippi with service records, a copy of an Amerisport Certificate of Origin, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Tennessee title in the seller’s name. Debuting at the Turin Motor Show in 1984, the GT5-S featured an integrated steel front spoiler with Carello fog lights and fender flares. Amerisport examples were delivered to the US without an engine, which was later installed along with a rear wing and an array of emissions equipment required for federalization. This example was involved in an accident in 1994 that resulted in damage to the front body and left door. Repairs to the body and floors were performed in 2010, after which the car was repainted black. The side mirrors are sagging, and flaws are visible on the front spoiler. Rust along the front-right wheel well, along with cracks and other imperfections in the finish, are viewable in the gallery below. The 351ci V8 was overhauled as part of the 2010 refurbishment and features an Edelbrock intake manifold, a polished K&N air cleaner assembly, and a Holley 750-cfm carburetor that was reportedly installed in 2020. Additional work performed at that time is said to have involved repairing the fuel tank and replacing the distributor cap and rotor along with the spark plugs and wires.
