- History notes
- This 1971 DeTomaso Pantera was acquired new by the original owner from McCormick Lincoln-Mercury, Inc. of Trenton, New Jersey, in 1971. Following a color change from white to red in 1985, chassis 02210 is said to have been kept in storage from 2002 to 2022 before being acquired by the current owner from the original owner in 2024. Now showing 18k miles, the car is powered by a 351ci Ford Cleveland V8 mated to a five-speed ZF manual transaxle and rides on 15″ Campagnolo cast magnesium wheels coupled with disc brakes at all four corners. Inside, Porsche 914–sourced bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl are accompanied by a dogleg-pattern gated shifter as well as air conditioning. Over $30k of recommissioning work performed from 2022 to 2025 involved rebuilding the steering rack, overhauling the brakes, servicing the fuel system, replacing the clutch cylinders, and more as detailed below. This Pantera is now offered on dealer consignment in Emeryville, California, with its DeTomaso Ownercard, a Deluxe Marti report, service records, and a clean New Jersey title. The Pantera’s bodywork was designed under the direction of American designer Tom Tjaarda. This example left the factory finished in white and was repainted red by M.D. Auto Works Inc. of Jamaica, New York, in November 1985. Carbon-look E36 M3–style mirrors have been added, and further details include pop-up headlights and quad exhaust outlets along with black window trim and bumperettes. The selling dealer notes flaking paint on the front valance along with checking around the body. The 15″ Campagnolo cast magnesium wheels have curb rash and are mounted with 185/70 front and 225/70 rear Pirelli Cinturato tires. The car rides on a four-wheel independent suspension, and braking is handled by power-assisted discs at each corner. The front brake calipers were overhauled, the pads were replaced, and the rotors were resurfaced up front in 2022. Rear brake work in 2024 involved rebuilding the calipers, replacing the pads, and resurfacing the rotors. Additional service at that time included rebuilding the steering rack as well as replacing the tie-rod ends. The Porsche 914–sourced bucket seats are trimmed in black vinyl, which extends to the dash, center console, rear bulkhead, and doors. Interior equipment includes an AstroLine AM/FM radio as well as electric windows and shoulder belts. The consigning dealer notes that the air conditioning system is functional with an engaged compressor and is charged, adding that it currently blows cool but not cold. The mid-mounted 351ci Ford Cleveland V8 featured a four-barrel Autolite carburetor from the factory for a rating of 310 horsepower. Records indicate that the engine was fitted with a replacement timing chain in 1985 and that the engine bay was cleaned and repainted in 2001. Recommissioning work in 2022 at The Stable, Ltd. in Lebanon Township, New Jersey, involved replacing the fuel pump as well as flushing the fuel and cooling systems. Replacement exhaust manifold gaskets were later installed by Stallion Motorsports of Costa Mesa, California, in 2024. A replacement oil pan and gasket were also installed at that time, though the selling dealer notes that an oil leak persists. A Wizard Cooling aluminum radiator with dual electric puller fans is fitted up front, and the engine breathes through a Holley 1850-2 600cfm four-barrel carburetor. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF five-speed manual transaxle. The hydraulic clutch cylinders were replaced in December 2022 as part of the aforementioned recommissioning work performed by The Stable, Ltd.
