History

History notes
This 1969 DeTomaso Mangusta is one of approximately 401 examples built during four years of production and is said to have appeared for sale in Los Angeles in 1977 before making its way to the collection of Chuck Wray in the late 2000s. The car was purchased circa 2010 by a California owner who commissioned a refurbishment that included a repaint in silver and a re-trim of the interior in tan leather, after which the car received the People’s Choice Award at the 2012 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. It was purchased in 2013 by its current owner, who has since displayed it twice at LeMay – America’s Car Museum as well as at the 2013 ArtCenter College of Design Car Classic, the 2014 Pacific Northwest Concours d’Elegance, where it won the Junior Judges Award, and the 2023 Avants Classics on the Green, for which it served as the poster car. Power is provided by a 302ci Ford V8 that breathes through a four-barrel carburetor and is mated to a ZF five-speed manual transaxle. Additional features include power-assisted disc brakes, coilover independent suspension, 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels, fixed quad headlights, air conditioning, power windows, and four-point harnesses. This Mangusta was featured on BaT in February 2008 and in August 2012 and is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a Washington title. This example received a color change from red to its current shade of silver during the refurbishment that was completed in 2012, while the exterior mirrors and right quarter panel were repainted between 2022 and 2023. Various wear is noted in the finish including chips and stress cracks adjacent to the corners of the windshield. Exterior features include fixed quad headlights, body-color side mirrors, round side markers, a mesh rear grille, and gullwing-style engine compartment doors, the latter of which incorporate rectangular glass panels, rear vents, quarter windows, and side louvers. Campagnolo wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 205/60R15 up front and 275/60R15 at the rear. The finish of the right rear wheel is noted to exhibit yellowing. Stopping is handled by power-assisted disc brakes with front cooling ducts, and the calipers are said to have been rebuilt and refinished during a freshening between October 2022 and July 2023. The cabin was re-trimmed during the refurbishment approximately 12 years ago and features tan leather over bucket seats along with matching upholstery covering the door panels, center tunnel, dash, and rear bulkhead. Additional features include gray carpeting, four-point latch-and-link harnesses, a gated shifter, drilled pedals, air conditioning, power windows, and a fire extinguisher. Creasing is noted on areas of the seat upholstery. The Ferrero three-spoke steering wheel features a wood- and leather-trimmed rim and frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,900-rpm redline. The five-digit odometer shows 24k miles, approximately 4k of which have been added under current ownership. Auxiliary instruments include a clock and gauges monitoring oil pressure, oil temperature, amperage, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The 302ci Ford V8 is topped by a four-barrel carburetor and an Offenhauser intake manifold. A refresh between 2022 and 2023 is said to have included fluid changes, a rebuild of the starter, and replacement of the alternator, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, and oil-pressure sender. Electrical repairs at that time included replacement of and repairs to the wiring for the ignition coil, charging system, cooling fans, and starter as well as the replacement of various relays.
