History notes: This 1999 DeTomaso Guarà is the prototype among three Spyders manufactured and was built on the underpinnings of a Guarà Coupe demonstrator at the suggestion of its current owner, an automotive and industrial designer and DeTomaso collector whose design firm pro industria Manfred Lang was commissioned by Alejandro de Tomaso to provide design plans for a Spyder with a manually operated soft top, a new interior, and facelifted bodywork. Alejandro de Tomaso then commissioned Bacchelli and Villa’s Carrozzeria Autosport in Bastiglia, Italy, to convert the car’s bodywork to Spyder form while commissioning Lupi of Modena, Italy, to implement the new Spyder’s interior design. After its 1999 completion the car debuted at the company’s 40th anniversary year celebration in Modena and was displayed in public for the first time at the 2000 Turin Motor Show. It was then used in publicity efforts that included being driven by journalists before being delivered to the current owner and registered in Germany in 2002. Finished in metallic gray over fiberglass and composite body panels, the car is powered by a mid-mounted 4.0-liter BMW quad-cam V8 that is mated to a Getrag six-speed manual transaxle. Additional features include an aluminum and composite honeycomb backbone chassis with an integrated 80-liter, a limited-slip differential, Formula 1-inspired adjustable coilover independent suspension with pushrod actuation, four-wheel Brembo disc brakes, 18” Marchesini magnesium alloy center-lock wheels, a Tubi Style exhaust system that accommodates a rear storage compartment, a terracotta convertible top, and terracotta and brown interior upholstery. This Guarà Spyder is now offered by the seller in Wiehl, Germany, on behalf of its current owner with prints of design sketches, DEKRA inspection paperwork from June 2025, and German registration that lists a first registration date of 2002. The Guarà debuted in coupe form in 1993 as the final project designed for DeTomaso by founder Alejandro de Tomaso and was inspired by the track-only Maserati Barchetta, whose designer Carlo Gaino also handled the Guarà’s styling. The 43 Guaràs built included 10 windshield-less Barchettas and three Spyders, with the latter’s genesis inspired by the input of this car’s current owner when he declined an opportunity to buy a coupe from DeTomaso sales manager Armin Fisher at the 1995 International Auto Show. According to the seller, this example began as a Guarà Coupe previously used as a demonstrator with approximately 4k kilometers before Bacchelli and Villa’s Carrozzeria Autosport was commissioned by DeTomaso to modify the bodywork according to the designs of pro industria Manfred Lang. Only two additional Spyders were constructed, each with standard Guarà Coupe interiors instead of the prototype’s one-off design, before production ceased due to the folding top design’s incompatibility with the model’s shift from BMW to higher Ford engines.
